The son of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was shot dead by masked home invaders on Tuesday, according to reports. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, once seen as Muammar’s successor, was an influential part of his father’s inner circle, performing public relations and diplomatic roles on his behalf. The 53-year-old was shot dead after “four masked men” stormed his home in the northwestern town of Zintan, reports stated. Gaddafi, who studied for a period at the London School of Economics, reportedly clashed with the assailants at the compound, the exact location of which was supposed to be a closely guarded secret. His father was ousted as Libyan leader and killed in the bloody October 2011 uprising. Saif was jailed as part of the ensuing regime change and was later released in 2017. After the uprising, he was charged in absentia for war crimes. He was also wanted for alleged crimes against humanity related to the revolt. It was controversial, then, when he announced a presidential bid in 2021. This was blocked, and the situation devolved into bitter arguments between rival administrations that saw the election cancelled altogether. Instability has reigned since the death of Gaddafi senior in 2011.

Homicide cops are investigating whether the fatal stabbing of former NFL player Kevin Johnson could be linked to three other slayings at around the same time. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is now probing whether the killing of the Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle was part of a spate of attacks targeting unhoused people between October and January. The 55-year-old was found dead on Jan. 21 at a homeless encampment in an unincorporated California neighborhood near Compton with “blunt head trauma and stab wounds,” the Los Angeles County medical examiner said. “Between October 2025 and January 2026, four homicides occurred in this area and remain under active investigation by the Homicide Bureau,” the sheriff’s department said in a news release. “At this time, investigators are working to determine whether these cases are related… All four victims were unhoused individuals who were living in encampments.” It added, “Homicide investigators continue to pursue all investigative leads and remain committed to identifying the individual or individuals responsible for these crimes.” The New England Patriots selected Johnson in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL draft and later moved on to the Minnesota Vikings and the Oakland Raiders before joining the Eagles.

NFL star Patrick Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes Sr., has been arrested for a probation violation, two years after a DWI arrest. The 55-year-old was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Smith County Jail in Texas after allegedly consuming alcohol, according to Smith County District Attorney Jacob Putman on KLTV. His alcohol ankle monitor allegedly registered a high reading on Jan. 1. Two urine tests taken on Jan. 5 and Jan. 9 both reportedly came back negative, according to court documents seen by TMZ. A motion has been filed to end the violation, and Mahomes Sr. can challenge the allegations. The arrest on Tuesday came exactly two years after his sixth arrest for DWI in February 2024, which was just before his son’s Super Bowl victory with the Kansas City Chiefs. “He’s doing good. I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is,” the NFL star told reporters at the time. “It’s a family matter, so I will just keep it to the family. That’s all I really have to say at this point.” Mahomes Sr. was a MLB pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates before retiring in 2009.

The husband of Today show host Savannah Guthrie is speaking out for the first time since the disappearance of his mother-in-law, Nancy Guthrie. A top restaurant in the United Kingdom saw its health rating take a hit after a food inspector made a shocking discovery on its premises. The Royal Native Oyster Stores, which appeared in the Michelin guide, had its hygiene rating downgraded to two stars after an inspector stumbled on a “foul-smelling” bucket of fish waste and other concerning issues during a visit in September, the Independent reported. The inspection at the restaurant in Whitstable, on the coast of Kent, also found flies on the countertops used for food preparation, as well on the cooks’ tools. The inspector also noted a lack of food safety credentials among staff, saying pointedly, “At the time of inspection, I was unable to see any evidence of formal food safety training amongst the chefs.” Further issues included dirt caked on the cutlery trays, the crushed ice machine and other equipment. Alongside major contamination concerns, the inspector found parts of the building in disrepair, including missing ceilings and severe damage to the walls and flooring. In light of the findings, the Canterbury City Council downgraded the restaurant’s hygiene rating from five stars to a paltry two.

Passengers aboard an already delayed American Airlines flight saw their trip abruptly cut short after the plane was forced to turn back due to a “disruptive customer,” according to The Independent. Flight AA2259, traveling from Miami to Quito, Ecuador, departed Saturday night after a delay of roughly 47 minutes from its scheduled departure time. About halfway through the four-hour journey, the aircraft issued a squawk 7700—an emergency code signaling a general in-flight emergency—and made an abrupt U-turn. Flight tracking data shows the Boeing 737 reversed course over Cuba and returned to Miami International Airport, landing shortly before 10 p.m. local time. According to the outlet, a spokesperson for American Airlines confirmed that law enforcement met the aircraft upon arrival to address the disruptive passenger. Following the ordeal, an American Airlines spokesperson told the outlet, “We thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their assistance in managing a difficult situation.” The Daily Beast has reached out to American Airlines for comment. Passengers were later rebooked on an alternative flight to Quito on Sunday.

Soap star Fay Lenore has died at her home in Ellon, Aberdeenshire at the age of 97. She started her acting career as early as one can on stage, as a one-year-old in 1929. She soon became a mainstay on British television and in the theater for decades, starting in earnest later in her youth. She’s best known for her performances in Crossroads, a ‘60s British soap opera, and Take the High Road, an ’80s soap opera. Her family celebrated her prolific acting career on her death notice, stating, “May your star shine as bright in heaven as you did on Earth.” Her death notice stated that she died on January 8 and was a “dearly loved wife” of her husband of nearly four decades, Jay Scott, who passed away in 1997.
